Industial times

During his time at the Yeast and spirits factory, Beijerinck had his own small laboratory, and it was here that his sister, Henriëtte visited him. In her diary, she wrote:

"Having achieved good results in my exams on the 5 April 1885, I visited Martinus in his laboratory in Delft. He sat there, surrounded by a mass of retorts, bottles and glassware, boxes, gas, corks and heating apparatus, so that it looked like the workshop of an alchemist. He was very busy studying bacteria that inhibit yeast, and looking for ways to grow yeast without them."

Her description beautifully fits the scene in the photograph of Beijerinck in his industrial laboratory (below)!
