Tobacco Mosaic Disease

TMV was the first virus to be recognized as being an infectious agent smaller even than bacteria. M.W. Beijerinck is generally credited with this discovery, although he himself recognized that he was building on the work of two other scientists, Dimitry Ivanovsky and Adolf Mayer. Beijerinck was certainly the first to use the term "virus". Sadly, he did not live long enough to see his ideas confirmed by electron microscopy.
