Terahertz Projects

This is some of the projects proposed by the TeraHertz Team at Optica:

  • TeraHertz Surfaces Waves Modeling

We have been developing the last years methods with which these near-field effects can be studied. These methods include the use of sharp metal tips, holes and other structures to concentrate light into a tiny volume and they require fundamental studies into the nature of the near-field, the effects of plasmons, and evanescent waves. The internship will consist on modelling different metallic structures then compare the results measurements done with the near field set-up. More info...

  • Inspection of Detects in Aeronautical Composites

In this project we will investigate a new method to detect defects in composite materials using TeraHertz radiation. We’ve already use this technique to study hidden paint layers in paintings. This method, which is based on determining them. THz optical properties of materials, makes it possible to perform 2D imaging of composite materials structures with artificial or natural defects. The long term goal of this research is to develop a system for aircraft maintenance operating at THz wavelengths. More info...

  • Mapping Hidden Layers of Paint on Genuine Paintings

In this project we use a new method to detect hidden layers of paint in paintings. We’ve already successfully proved that this is possible on a mock-up. This method, which is based on determining the THz optical properties of materials, makes it possible to perform 2D imaging of layered structures with a good estimation of their thicknesses. The long term goal of this research is to develop a complete THz imaging system for in situ measurements (in a museum for example). More info...
