Lecture series about evolution in the Botanical Garden

On four Fridays in September four speakers from completely different backgrounds will give lunch lectures about evolution in the TU Delft Botanical Garden.

The open air lectures - part of the Darwin exhibition in the Botanical Garden - will take place on Friday 4, 11, 18 and 25 September from 12.45 to 13.45h. The speakers are: Jacob Kroeze, Taeke de Jong, Jeroen Wiedenhof, Simon de Vries.

  • 4 September: Jacob Kroeze will talk about "Darwin in his and our time". What knowledge was available to Darwin in the 19th century, enabling him to formulate his own theory? To what odd interpretations did Darwin''s theory lead? What is the situation now?
    Kroeze is a teacher of General Science at the Marlet College in Grave.
  • 11 September: Taeke de Jong will talk about "The evolution of a design": genetic material, combinations, mutations and a selective environment. De Jong is a full professor of Environmental Planning and Ecology at the Faculty of Architecture, TU Delft.
  • 18 September: Jeroen Wiedenhof talks about "Evolution and Language". Wiedenhof works for the institutes of Regional Studies and Linguistics at the Universiteit Leiden.
  • 25 September: Simon de Vries talks about "The origin of living matter". De Vries is a full professor of Enzymology at the faculty of Applied Sciences, TU Delft.
