Bob Ursem (BT) receives DEMO award for ‘Particulate Matter Reduction System’
07 December 2011 by Webredactie-TNWDuring the recent Delft Innovation Award ceremony, Bob Ursem received the DEMO award for his ‘Particulate Matter Reduction System’. The 20,000 euro award is intended to assist with the (further) development of the invention to produce a prototype.
Bob Ursem noticed how sea buckthorns can defy gravity by lifting particles in the air. Based on this natural principle, he developed a system that gives ultra-fine particles and fine particles in the air a small positive charge, enabling him to control them, attract them in a particular direction and remove them. It is currently being used along the A10 motorway and preparations are underway to capture particulates from vehicle emissions. His system can be used for particles that are 10 nanometres or larger, which means it can also remove virus particles and bacteria from the air. For this reason, the judging panel advises him to focus more on healthcare, and especially on purifying the air in operating theatres, where he has already successfully proved that he can remove ultra-fine particles.
