On 1 January 2007 Ernst Sudhölter took up his post as the new Departmental Director of the DelftChemTech department, succeeding Professor Peter Appel in this function.

Ernst Sudhölter studied Chemistry at Groningen and gained his PhD there as well. He spent several years working at KSLA, as the Shell laboratories in Amsterdam were then known, after which he switched his focus to the academic sector. His first teaching post was as Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Twente and from 1990 onwards as Professor of Organic Chemistry in Wageningen.

In addition to his directorial work he is also Professor of Nano-Organic Chemistry, where he will chiefly be focussing on synthesis, characterisation, self-organising properties and applications of nanocapsules and functionalised nanowires.

Peter Appel will continue working at DelftChemTech for one day a week, carrying out research and supervising PhD candidates.
