Bob Ursem''s particulates reduction system wins Intertraffic Innovation Award 2008

TU Delft and BAM have won the Intertraffic Innovation Award 2008 with their joint entry: ''a particulates reduction system''. This award was presented in the RAI Amsterdam on 1 April to the TU Delft/BAM partnership by Wim Kuijken, Permanent Secretary for the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management.

A TU Delft patent forms the basis of this system for reducing particulates (FDRS-PM10). The system reduces the concentration of particulates in its immediate environment. The principle underlying this system involves creating a space charge (electrostatic roof) above a road, as well as charging up particulates. This charge makes it possible to manipulate and direct the particulates.

The method developed here uses fine threads that can be attached above a road to structures such as street lighting, and earthed screens made of metal gauze, located at the roadside. Because of the electrostatic field that develops between the threads and the screens, the charged particles are attracted to the earthed metal screens. The system requires little power and is therefore environmentally friendly, as well as being safe for humans and animals.
