Bio-based technology initiative Delft

25 January 2008 by TNWToday | M&C

TU Delft, DSM and Shell have expressed their sincere interest in initiating a joint Industrial Biotechnology initiative on the Delft Technopolis Innovation Park. This initiative will focus on the development of Bio-based innovations, attract additional Bio-based activities and offer strong added value to top level talent through world class research and education.

Bio-based opportunities
The utilization and implementation of Bio-based Technologies for the production of energy, fuels, chemicals, pharma and food products and ingredients are rapidly growing. Societal aspects, scientific progress and economic considerations all contribute to the stimulation of Bio-based manufacturing. Innovations will range from biofuels and chemicals, to food ingredients and polymer building blocks.

The partners
Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) has decided to relocate all its activities around Biotechnology and Green and Sustainable Chemistry to the Delft Technopolis Innovation Park. Technopolis is a dedicated area for high-tech development, attracting leading industries. TU Delft will transfer its Departments of Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering to a sophisticated laboratory, bringing together industrial technological demand and academic scientific development.

DSM is currently investigating the opportunities and possibilities for further developments in the area of Industrial Biotechnology. DSM has placed a large incentive on further developments, both through internal investments and external collaborations.

Shell has a substantial Bio-based programme focussing on the development of fuels with a low carbon footprint. Shell recognizes that collaboration with universities and business partners will largely accelerate the development of a material bio-energy business.

DSM and Shell have a longstanding relationship with TU Delft, specifically in the areas of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Process Engineering. They both participate in the B-Basic consortium, and DSM is member of the industrial platform of the Kluyver Centre for Genomics of Industrial Fermentation.
