Pieter Kruit (IST/DO) received a Royal Decoration

Professor Pieter Kruit, Professor of Theoretical and Applied Physics at the Faculty of Applied Sciences (AS) has being made a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion. As he was presently abroad, the ceremony was held at a later date.

Professor Pieter Kruit is receiving this Royal Decoration for his work as a scientist, entrepreneur and mentor and for his great contribution to society.

Pieter Kruit is a figurehead for the university community and has been an inspiration to his research group for more than 20 years. His originality and capacity to innovate have resulted in research that has been used for major product innovations. He achieved major breakthroughs in the field of electron and ion optics for electron microscopy and electron lithography. His inventions have been recorded in no less than 46 patents and have led to major industrial breakthroughs. He is the scientific linchpin in the global semiconductor industry’s quest for solutions for the production of advanced computer chips.

Pieter Kruit is a teacher par excellence. He seeks always to improve education at his faculty and ensures that the engineers of the future under his wing are optimally prepared for their role in society. He is a strong advocate of entrepreneurship in the curriculum and of the importance of an ethical sense of responsibility for the next generation of engineers.

Throughout his career, Pieter Kruit has always demonstrated enormous social engagement. He participates in many local, regional and national knowledge centres, think tanks and advisory councils and invests much time and energy in them.

 

TU Delft professors Alfred Kleinknecht (TBM) and Mick Eekhout (BK) received also a Royal Decoration this year.
