Prof. M.J. de Vries, a physicist with a PhD in physics education and technological didactics, has been appointed as part-time Professor of Education and will work on the Science Education & Communication (SEC) course, which includes TU Delft’s teacher training course.

Marc de Vries has received international recognition for his research on technical education in secondary schools and technological didactics. His research and expertise have been instrumental in the development of an educational methodology for technology in basic education.

De Vries is affiliated with the Eindhoven University of Technology and has worked as an affiliate professor in Reformational Philosophy at TU Delft since 1 September 2003. He is part of the Technological Philosophy research group in the faculty of Technology, Policy and Management (TPM).

SEC to become research group
By appointing De Vries, the faculty of Applied Sciences aims to boost research into the didactics of physics, chemistry, mathematics and computer science. To achieve this, Science Education & Communication has been given its own research group within the Applied Sciences faculty in addition to the course already in existence.

It is yet to be decided which department will provide the best setting for this new research group. SEC members hail from both the teacher training course and science communication. The search is still underway for a Professor of Science Communication.

Marc de Vries will begin work as Professor of Education on 1 September 2008.
