Micro-organism named after Prof. Lex Scheffers (BT)

09 February 2010 by M&C TNW/BT

It does not happen everyday that a micro-organism is named after a Delft scientist. This honour has just been bestowed on our "yeast nestor" Lex Scheffers. The genus Scheffersomyces includes the famous and intensively studied xylose-fermenting yeast formerly (!) known as Pichia stipitis, which has now been upgraded to Scheffersomyces stipitis.

Congratulations to Lex with this well deserved token of appreciation by two leading scientists in yeast taxonomy. See picture for a quote from their publication (Kurtzmann and Suzuki. 2010. Mycoscience - online publication  DOI 10.1007/s10267-009-0011-5).
