Prof. Harm Jonker (MSP/IEP) appointed Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Professor

TU Delft has appointed Theo Dingemans and Harm Jonker as Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Professors. The Antoni van Leeuwenhoek chairs at TU Delft were created to promote outstanding young scientists to the position of professor early on in their academic career with the aim of maximising their career potential. Jonker focuses on the role of clouds in climate research, while Dingemans deals with new high-performance polymers.

Cloud Research

Harm Jonker has been working as Associate Professor of Multi-Scale Physics at the Faculty of Applied Sciences since 2004. During this time, he created an entirely new research field using existing expertise in fluid mechanics and turbulence at TU Delft to address important questions in the field of weather and climate. He looked specifically at the role of clouds, of which relatively little is known. Scientists believe that clouds could have a considerable impact on the size of the estimated enhanced greenhouse effect.

In 2006, Jonker was appointed head of a new research group on  ''Clouds, Climate and Air Quality''. He proceeded to set up a collaborative project with the Dutch Met Office KNMI and the renowned National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, where he was recently nominated for the post of ‘affiliate scientist’.

Jonker graduated in Physics in 1989 from the University of Utrecht, where he went on to complete his PhD in 1993. Before joining the team of researchers at TU Delft in 2000, Jonker worked for the Dutch Met Office.

Maximum potential

The Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (AVL) appointments at TU Delft are reserved for the crème-de-la-crème of Delft’s young scientists. Promoting them to the position of professor enables them to realise their full potential during their academic career. AVL professors are not immediately burdened with the same management and teaching duties associated with a traditional professorship.
