Reactor Institute Delft official partner International Atomic Energy Agency

07 May 2009 by M&C

The Reactor Institute Delft, the nuclear research reactor at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, was designated one of the world’s thirteen Collaborating Centres of the International Atomic Energy Agency in February 2009. This designation signifies the important international role of TU Delft in the development and dissemination of knowledge on nuclear technology. On Monday 11 May 2009 the IAEA will present the official plaque to TU Delft.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is a specialized United Nations organization. In collaboration with member states and other partners, The IAEA aims to promote safe, guaranteed and peaceful nuclear technology, both for the supply of energy and for scientific research. The Reactor Institute Delft, the nuclear research reactor at Delft University of Technology, uses its reactor to research innovative materials for sustainable energy technology, for example for solar cells and energy storage. The nuclear radiation is also used for research into medical diagnostics and therapy. In addition, the Delft Reactor Institute is the academic knowledge and education centre in the Netherlands in the area of nuclear energy.

From February 2009 the institute is part of the network of IAEA Collaborating Centres. The network consists of 13 nuclear research reactors worldwide, 4 of which are located in Europe. In the network, the Reactor Institute Delft focuses specifically on giving advice and support concerning nuclear knowledge management to countries.

On Monday 11 May 2009 at 9.00am Mr. Natesan Ramamoorthy of the IAEA will officially confirm the status of the Reactor Institute Delft as the IAEA Collaborating Centre – for neutron activation based methodologies of research reactors – by presenting a plaque. The meeting will take place at the Reactor Institute Delft, Mekelweg 15, Delft.
