06 November 2008 by M&C TNW

The Faculty of Applied Sciences held its first PhD Open Day on Tuesday, 4 November 2008 attracting over 50 potential PhD researchers of 17 different nationalities. The students in attendance learnt of the multifaceted aspects of PhD research. By engaging in personal contact with research leaders, PhD alumni and current PhD researchers, participants were encouraged to consider whether PhD research would be an option in their future plans.

PhD alumni
The Open Day featured presentations by PhD alumni, laboratory tours of the Multi-Scale Physics department and the Radiation Institute, and a panel discussion with current PhD researchers. PhD alumni from NMi, Corus, Shell and Altran Technologies graciously shared personal stories of their present work and illustrated how their experience as PhD researchers at the Faculty of Applied Sciences facilitated their career development.

Panel discussion
The panel discussion with current PhD researchers brought forth many differing opinions on the individual motivation for and questions about the added value of PhD research, and offered a glimpse into the lives of the various researchers. The Open Day concluded with a lively discussion between current MSc students, PhD researchers, and members of academic staff, followed by a reception and buffet dinner.

Successful
Attendee evaluations of the Open Day indicate that the event was successful in offering MSc students the opportunities to learn more about making career choices, find out more about the life of a PhD researcher, and realise opportunities after the PhD. The vast majority said they were more likely to consider applying for PhD research after attending this event.

A heartfelt thank you is extended to all of those who helped make this event a success.
