Rubicon grants for Job Boekhoven (ChemE/SAS) and Ferry Prins (QN/MED)

16 December 2011 by M&C Applied Sciences

TU Delft researchers Job Boekhoven and Ferry Prins have received the Rubicon grant from science sponsor the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research. The Rubicon grant offers Dutch researchers who have just obtained a PhD the opportunity to gain research experience abroad. Both Delft scientists are headed for the United States, Boekhoven to Northwestern University and Prins to Harvard University.

Below is a brief summary of their research programmes.

Smart microcapsules for new brain tissue

    • Job Boekhoven (1984)
    • Northwestern University - The Stupp Laboratory (US)
    • 24 months

A stroke is the most common cause of permanent invalidity in Western countries. With the aid of stem cells and ‘smart’ microcapsules, the researchers will be developing a new method of repairing dead brain tissue. The capsules form a nestling spot for the stem cells and send out local signals to cells to generate new brain tissue.

    Opto-electronic component at nano scale

      • Ferry Prins (1983)
      • Harvard University (US)
      • 24 months

The major challenge in linking optical and electronic components on a chip is the difference in scale. To breach this gap, the researcher will develop an opto-electronic component the size of a single nano particle.
