The Applied Sciences'' mastertrack “Optics in Science and Technology” has been recognized by the European Commission and included in the prestigious Erasmus Mundus framework. Apply now for the international programme which is offered jointly by 5 top-level, academic partners in Europe.

Optics: a vital branch of science and technology
Defined as the branch of physics that describes the behaviour and properties of light and the interaction of light with matter, optics are key to science & technology in academia and in industries. Applications range from biosciences to medical technology, from quantum physics to telecommunications, from optical systems to mechatronics and image analysis.

A unique European optics programme
Europe has recognised the vital importance of optics to address major challenges such as sustainable development or security in all its aspects. This is the reason why the special Delft mastertrack “Optics in Science and Technology” has been recognized by the European Commission and included in the prestigious Erasmus Mundus framework.

The programme is a unique European masterprogramme providing a comprehensive and multidisciplinary coverage of the field of optics, from upstream scientific aspects to engineering and applications, in major sectors of the economy.  It is offered jointly by five top-level, academic partners in Europe:

  • Friedrich Schiller University, Germany
  • Imperial College, London, United Kingdom
  • Institut d’Optique and Université Paris-Sud 11, Paris, France
  • Warsaw University of Technology, Poland.
  • Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands

Furthermore, the programme is supported by major industries such as Alcatel, Thales, Zeiss and ASML.

Contents of the programme
Students enrolled in the two-year programme will study in two different countries, spending one year in each. A traineeship, summer workshop and master thesis project are integral part of the programme. Each graduate is awarded the Master’s degrees of the 2 institutions involved in his/her individual study path. Detailed curriculum information will be available on www.master-optics.eu.

Are you ready for a career in optics?
We are looking for excellent students holding a BSc/BEng degree in (applied) physics or in a similar area with a significant exposure to physics. Applications can be done online only, via www.master-optics.eu. The tuition and service fees (see website) include all travel costs and workshop fees. Deadlines: January 31st for non-European applicants, May 15th for European applicants.

Scholarships and grants
Students accepted for the programme are eligible for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship (21.000 €/year for non-European students) or an Erasmus/Socrates grant (1.500 € for European students)

Optics has been around for many centuries and will remain at the heart of science and technology for centuries to come. This is your opportunity to explore Europe and become part of the vibrant community of optics scientists and engineers!
