InterSECtion students help the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science
17 January 2012 by M&C Applied SciencesFive students have developed three ideas for the organisation of science communication events in the Netherlands. They did this at the request of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science in a CrashTeam of the InterSECtion student society. During a presentation for the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science on 9 January, one of the three ideas was chosen for discussion by a wider public on 17 January.
Sciencedating
The idea that was chosen is a national event with the working title of ‘Science dating’. It is a method for using a personal approach to link existing science events together and to show the public the different sides of science and the various parties involved. We are keeping the exact idea secret until after 17 January. Besides the CrashTeam, other communication professionals will also pitch their ideas.
Structure
Besides the originality of the ideas, especially the thoughts behind the ideas, the core messages and the preconditions were also positively received by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. Considering the diversity of parties involved in science that communicate with the public about it, this was essential, yet far from easy. Various aspects can also be used in the future to develop science communication events.
Science Education and Communication
InterSECtion is the student society of the Science Education and Communication (SEC) Master’s degree programme. This degree programme consists of two components, science education (SE) and science communication (SC). At SC, students learn to build a bridge between scientists and a wider public. For this purpose, the combination of modules consists partly of communication modules and partly of purely technical modules. The SE programme educates students to become lecturers.
