Chemical engineer Rutger van Raalten, MSc, in finals Shell Bachelor Master Awards

3 students from TU Delft and 3 students from TU Eindhoven will be in the finals of the Shell Bachelor Master Awards 2007. Bachelor of Science Roeland Jan Dijkhuis and Masters of Science Jimmy Melskens and Rutger van Raalten, who all received their titles from TU Delft, will defend their theses before a jury consisting of President of Shell Nederland, Peter de Wit, the Vice-Chancellor of Eindhoven University, Hans van Duijn and the Presidents of the Executive Board at Twente and Delft, Anne Flierman and Hans van Luijk. The finals will take place on 14 February 2008 in Eindhoven. Education Minister Ronald Plasterk will present the awards.

The finalists
3 TU Delft students are finalists in the Shell Bachelor Master Awards this year. Applied Earth scientist Roeland Jan Dijkhuis obtained his Bachelor title last year with a financial feasibility study into the use of geothermal energy at the TU Delft campus. Jimmy Melskens’ MSc thesis in Electrical Engineering dealt with a new material for thin film solar cells that shows less degradation under the influence of sunlight. Chemical engineer Rutger van Raalten, MSc improved the catalyst performance of electrodes in fuel cells.

The awards
Dijkhuis, Melskens and Van Raalten will do an ‘elevator pitch’ before the members of the jury: President of Shell Nederland, Peter de Wit, the Vice-Chancellor of Eindhoven University, Hans van Duijn and the Presidents of the Executive Board at Twente and Delft, Anne Flierman and Hans van Luijk. Education Minister Ronald Plasterk will present the awards to the winners. The winner of the Bachelor Award will receive € 2500, de Master winner will receive € 5000.

Shell Bachelor Master Award
The Shell Bachelor Master Awards are awarded by Shell Nederland B.V. to the best Bachelor and the best Master graduate in the area of sustainable energy and sustainable development. This is the third time the Shell Bachelor Master Awards are organised specifically for students from the three universities of technology. The finals will take place on 14 February 2008 in the Aula at Eindhoven University.
