Group Design Project

PDEng-trainee Magdalena Stepien on the Group Design Project:
"During the second half of my first year, I and six fellow PDEng trainees started our four-month group design project, focusing on a design challenge put forward by a company. We are designing a sustainable product based on polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), which can be derived from waste streams. This compound can be biotechnologically converted to certain bioplastics. So far it is looking very promising.”
First Year - Coursework and Group Design Project
The first year of the programme is largely dedicated to course work to broaden and deepen your knowledge. The core courses Industrial BioProduct Design, Design Theory and Methodology, Turning Technology into Business, Project Management and Economic Evaluation will provide you with the necessary non-technological background to evaluate the effects of a technology in the industrial context. You choose the remainder of the coursework in one of the four different profiles:
- Cell Factory
- Drug Delivery & Diagnostics
- Functional Genomics & Bio-Informatics
- Molecular Design
Another important part of your first year is the Group Design Project. This is where you implement your expertise in a real industrial project.
