"The world’s crème-de-la-crème come to Delft to hone their design skills with our two-year postgraduate programme."
Programme
The first year of the programme consists of coursework and a Group Design Project, the second year is devoted to the Individual Design Project in (collaboration with) industry.
1st year
Your course programme is tailor-made and differs from trainee to trainee, depending on background and interest. Part of it is compulsory: all disciplines have to be represented. The courses are organized by different institutions, like the TU Delft and the University of Leiden, but also the Graduate School on Process Technology (OSPT) and BSDL-EDU organize courses, that are specifically aimed at the PDEng, PhD or professional level.
Below is an overview of the compulsory disciplines, with an example of selected courses
DISCIPLINE | SELECTED COURSE |
Applied mathematics | Numerical Methods in Chemical Engineering |
Physical/chemical basics | An unified approach to mass transfer |
Conversion technology and reactor design | Bioreactor design and operation |
| Scale-up/Scale down |
Separation processes | Distillation, Absorption and Extraction |
Process integration and control | Advanced methods Process Design and Analysis |
| Advanced Process Integration & Plant-wide Control |
| Thermodynamics in Biochemical Engineering |
Biosciences and environmental technology | Metabolic Reprogramming |
| Systems Biology |
| Applied genomics of Industrial Fermentation |
| Microbial Physiology and Fermentation Tech |
| Molecular Genetics |
| Bioconversion Technology |
Business sciences | Economic evaluation of projects |
| Product discovery and design |
Communication skills | Project Management |

Group Design Project
Obtain the essentials of engineering design, while working in a team with other postgraduate students.
2nd year
During the second year you work on an industrial, Individual Design Project. This is where you implement and integrate all the first year courses, the engineering and scientific ones with the project management and economics. This project is performed in the R&D department of an industry or as a developer in a smaller industry. It may be providing a solution for a specific problem, but it may also regard the whole design process, from idea to feasibility.
