QUANTUM TRANSPORT GROUP IN THE NEWS
03 augustus 2004
As the authors, led by Leo Kouwenhoven and Lieven Vandersypen, discuss in their paper, the electrical read-out of single spins has thus far been impossible. The new Delft results demonstrate electrical single-shot measurement of the state of an individual electron spin in a semiconductor quantum dot. This is achieved by using spin-to-charge conversion of a single electron confined in the dot, and subsequently detecting the single-electron charge using a quantum point contact; the spin measurement visibility turns out to be around 65%.
The results received much attention in the Dutch media, for example Dutch TVs Noorderlicht. The news item can be found on their website, www.vpro.nl/wetenschap/index.shtml
