START OF THE CASIMIR RESEARCH SCHOOL LEIDEN-DELFT
27 augustus 2004
The Casimir Research School (CRS) will be officially established on September 15th, 2004. Its name is in honour of Dutch physicist H.B.G. Casimir (1909-2000).
The Casimir Research School aims to provide an intellectually stimulating environment to deepen and broaden the PhD training in physics and closely related disciplines at Leiden University and Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. The school consists mostly of researchers at the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience Delft and at the Leiden Institute of Physics. About 100 PhD students and 50 Senior researcher participate in the schools educational programme.
The Casimir Research school offers graduate courses by leading researchers on mesoscopic physics, biophysics, laser physics, quantum-information-processing, phenomenological physics, advanced solid state physics, physics principles of measurements as well as other topics. Furthermore bi-annual workshops are held to facilitate exchange of information between researchers within the Casimir Research school and to encourage joint research topics. Bringing Leiden and Delft research and researchers in contact with each other is an important aim of the researchschool. Finally, the unique facilities of the Lorentzcenter in Leiden are used for one-week thematic PhD workshops, held with internationally leading experts who interact and educate the young PhD students.
More information about Casimir and the School can be found on casimir.researchschool.nl.
The official opening of the Casimir Research School will take place on September 15th, in Delft. Speakers will address Casimirs vision on science and technology as well as the scientific legacy of Casimir in todays physics. The full programme can also be found on casimir.researchschool.nl .
