20th Century labs

The current microbiology building makes up part of the Kluyver Laboratory for Biotechnology and is, together with the Biochemistry building (now Enzymology), attached to the old laboratory built for van Iterson. Kluyver was very much involved in the design of this laboratory, but died just before it was finished. This (above) is how it appeared not long after it was opened.

The building has undergone a number of changes through the years, to bring it up to the standards required in modern laboratories, but Kluyver would still recognise many of the features, including the microbial ceiling (below) in the hallway, and the memorial to Beijerinck which was brought from the old laboratory.
