ERC Starting Grant for Ferdinand Grozema (DCT/OM)
17 September 2009 by M&C TNWFerdinand Grozema, researcher of Opto-electronic Materials at the TU Delft department of DelftChemTech, is one of fifteen Dutch winners of the European Research Council’s (ERC) Starting Grant competition. Grozema conducts research into dye sensitized solar cells. These solar cells are cheaper to produce than the current crystalline silicon solar cells, but the efficiency of the cells still needs to be improved considerably. In the coming five years, Grozema can use the grant’s 1.2 million Euros to develop new molecules in which one photon does not excite just the one, but more electrons. This process could significantly improve the efficiency of this type of solar cells.
The ERC Starting Grants aim to support young, up-and-coming researchers who are about to establish or consolidate their own research team and to start conducting independent research in Europe. The grant can mount up to 2 million Euros for a five year project. The total ERC Grant budget is 325 million Euros.
